What is the most appropriate management?

A. Amoxicillin-clavulanate for 7 days to prevent pneumonia
Guidelines advise against antibiotics in uncomplicated tracheobronchitis: they do not prevent pneumonia and select for resistance. It is also not the first-choice drug if one becomes necessary.
B. A fluoroquinolone, because Bordetella bronchiseptica is resistant to most antibiotics
There is no indication for antibiotics here, and fluoroquinolones should be reserved for infections where culture and susceptibility justify them.
C. Thoracic radiographs and tracheal wash before any decision
In a typical acute case without systemic signs they are not needed. They are indicated if fever, lethargy or crackles appear, or the cough does not improve.
D. No antibiotics; rest, avoid the collar and an antitussive if coughing prevents rest, and reassess if fever, lethargy or anorexia develop, in which case doxycycline is the first choice
Correct. According to ISCAID guidelines, most cases of canine infectious respiratory disease complex are viral or self-limiting within 7–10 days. Antibiotics (doxycycline, active against Bordetella and Mycoplasma) are considered if there is fever, lethargy, inappetence or mucopurulent discharge.
lightbulb Key takeaway
Canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) is caused, often as co-infection, by Bordetella bronchiseptica, parainfluenza, adenovirus type 2, respiratory coronavirus, Mycoplasma cynos and others. Isolate the dog for about 2 weeks and avoid antitussives if the cough is productive or there is pneumonia.
