Cystoisospora coccidiosis in puppies: treatment
Litter of six 5-week-old German Shepherd puppies in a breeding kennel. Three have watery diarrhoea and poor growth; flotation shows numerous Cystoisospora oocysts. The other three are healthy.
What is the most appropriate action?
chevron_right Show answer and explanation
A. Treat the whole litter with toltrazuril and tighten hygiene in the whelping area
Correct. Toltrazuril acts on all intracellular stages and reduces oocyst shedding and clinical signs. The healthy littermates share the environment and are probably in the prepatent period, so the whole litter is treated. In Spain it is licensed for dogs in combination with emodepside.
B. Treat only the puppies with diarrhoea, using metronidazole
Metronidazole is not an anticoccidial, and treating only the sick puppies leaves the infected littermates uncontrolled.
C. Fenbendazole for 3 days for the whole litter
Fenbendazole is useful against nematodes and Giardia, but not against coccidia.
D. Do not treat: oocysts in puppies are an incidental, unimportant finding
In a healthy adult they may be incidental, but in puppies with diarrhoea and high counts coccidiosis is clinically relevant and can be severe.
lightbulb Key takeaway
Clinical coccidiosis occurs mainly between 3 and 12 weeks of age, when weaning, stress and high infection pressure coincide in breeding kennels and shelters. Treat the whole litter and remember that antiparasitics do not replace hygiene.
