Faecal parvovirus test after recent vaccination
9-week-old French Bulldog puppy vaccinated 5 days ago with a modified-live parvovirus vaccine. Today its faeces are slightly soft, but it is eating, active and not vomiting. A faecal parvovirus antigen rapid test is performed.
| Parameter | Result | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Faecal parvovirus antigen | Weak positive | Negative |
| White blood cells | 11,500/µL | 6,000–17,000 |
| Lymphocytes | 3,900/µL | 1,000–4,800 |
What is the most appropriate interpretation?

A. Confirmed parvovirus infection: hospitalise in isolation with intensive fluid therapy
With a stable puppy, normal leukogram and recent vaccination, the positive result does not confirm disease. Hospitalising it with sick dogs would also be a risk to it.
B. Probable shedding of vaccine virus; monitor and, if in doubt, use PCR that distinguishes vaccine strain
Correct. Modified-live vaccines can cause weak positives on faecal antigen tests in the days after vaccination (roughly 3–10 days). A stable puppy with normal white cells supports this explanation; monitor progress and use strain-differentiating PCR if it deteriorates.
C. Invalid result: parvovirus tests are only reliable in adults
Faecal antigen tests were designed precisely for puppies, the highest-risk group. The issue here is recent vaccination, not age.
D. The vaccine has failed due to maternal antibodies; revaccinate today
Maternal antibody interference explains vaccine failures, but it is not diagnosed with an antigen test. Revaccinating 5 days later is not indicated.
lightbulb Key takeaway
The faecal antigen test is highly specific, but it can be positive after a live vaccine and falsely negative very early or when intestinal antibodies neutralise the virus. With compatible signs and leucopenia, a negative result does not rule out parvovirus: repeat the test or use PCR.
